Why Ashgrove Ledger

What we bring to each engagement

Archival methods, not improvised files

Every engagement uses accession codes, neutral storage materials, and finding aids drawn from established archival practice — the same methods used by libraries and record offices.

Nothing retained without your instruction

For the Where Things Are Sheet, no records are held by us after the appointment closes. For the archive programme, retention terms are set in writing before work begins.

No interpretation, no advice

We record what you tell us and describe what we observe. Questions of legal meaning, valuation, or ownership are referred to the family's own qualified professionals.

Sessions conducted in English or Bahasa Malaysia

Appointments run in whichever language the household is most comfortable using. Written outputs default to English unless otherwise requested.

Copies for every branch of the family

All printed outputs are supplied in whatever quantity the family needs. For the archive programme, encrypted digital copies go to each participating household.

Designed for use when time is short

The outputs are written so that a family member who was not present at the session can read and act on them without needing explanation from anyone who was.

Is there a drawer worth opening now?

Families often say the hardest part was not knowing where to begin. A short enquiry by phone or email is enough to work out which service, if any, fits what you are trying to do.

Common Questions

Questions families ask before getting in touch

What does a Where Things Are Sheet actually contain?

It is a single printed page listing each document or account a household holds, where the original is kept (drawer, filing cabinet, online portal, solicitor's office), and the name and published contact channel of whoever issued it. It uses the household's own words, typed up neatly during the appointment. Nothing is interpreted or explained beyond what the household itself says.

Does Ashgrove Ledger provide legal or financial advice?

No. All three services are archival and organisational in nature. We describe, record, and catalogue. Questions about what a document means, whether an object has a particular value, or how an estate should be distributed are referred to the family's own lawyers, accountants, and other qualified professionals.

How long does the Heirloom Cataloguing engagement take?

The duration depends on the number of items. A household with thirty to fifty objects typically needs two to three half-day sessions. We discuss scope in an initial enquiry before any commitment is made, so you have a realistic picture of what is involved.

Is the Family Archive Programme suitable if not all family members are in Malaysia?

Yes. Encrypted digital copies are delivered to each participating household regardless of where they are located. The printed finding aid is produced for the primary household in Malaysia. Family members overseas receive the digital collection and a copy of the handover brief.

What happens to our documents and photographs after the engagement?

For the Where Things Are Sheet, nothing is retained by us after the appointment. For the cataloguing and archive programme, retention arrangements are set out in writing before work begins. No material is shared with any third party without written instruction from the household.

Can the session be conducted in Bahasa Malaysia?

Yes. Sessions run in the language most comfortable for the household. Please mention your preference when you get in touch and we will arrange accordingly. Written outputs default to English unless the family requests otherwise.
